GST goes up,
Your savings go down.
You protest all day,
And make a lot of sound.
The smart are getting smarter,
And the rich are getting richer.
If you find that you are lagging behind,
You better pull your socks higher.
Stop complaining so much,
And start mugging away.
If you don’t upgrade yourself,
You’ll only get a smaller pay.
It’s not so easy you say,
Opportunities don’t come my way.
But this is life my friend,
You are either lucky or you are suay.
Some can earn a million,
Just by shading six numbers.
Others slog for decades,
But end up with bankruptcy letters.
You can’t bring money to the grave,
But your loved ones can burn you some.
If you had been bad to those around you,
Your afterlife if any will be spent eating crumbs.
Don’t say nobody ever warned you,
And don’t say you’ve wasted your life.
As long as you’re able to live happily,
Be glad that you’re alive.
If you are not happy,
Do something constructive.
If folding cranes doesn’t help,
At least think positive.

Haze Maze...
Dear Ms. Haze,
You are so kind.
Nobody suspects me now,
When I release gas from behind.
Drivers drive slower too,
Making the roads much safer.
Now even snails can cross the road,
Without facing any danger.
More people are losing their way,
And end up in weird places.
Remember the man on the tracks?
He might just be tying shoe laces.
We can’t really see very clearly,
But I suppose you meant well.
Our nation has been working too hard,
So it’s good time to escape from hell.
We can get MCs daily,
And skip all the dreaded exercise.
In return you make us perspire more,
So it’s a blessing in disguise.
The mystified outdoors;
What a genius you are.
Al fresco dining was never so romantic,
With all the smoke but no cigar.
Lovers’ hearts pump much faster,
And both their breaths are taken away.
They cry when they look at each other,
Oh my you really like to play.
You should have come sooner,
For our population is dwindling.
The longer you stay around,
The stronger lovers feel that feeling.
But sadly some nonsense parents,
Create another stupid problem.
They don’t want to look after the child,
And push the blame when he turns rotten.
So could you kindly cloud their brains,
And perhaps short-circuit their minds?
Otherwise please choke them impotent;
We’d rather have one less misaligned.
After you leave us there’ll be more rice,
And you can see we find you really nice.
We even created a fund under your name,
So the next time you arrive please bring more advice.

Adulthood...
Another of this day has come to pass,
And to mark that change my age will plus.
A new phase of my life is about to start;
Allow me first to reminisce my past.
I was born in a family where money is not plenty,
Except for care and concern that flows very freely.
With two older siblings and hainanese parents to live by,
My childhood days were lived in perfect harmony.
But in school I was a child with no mind of his own,
Following instructions like a stone being thrown.
I often do things without asking myself why,
And I always end up wondering where time has flown.
Moving to secondary my life is quite the same,
Following people and be a pawn in others’ game.
At least I socialised and enjoyed my time,
A bit late but managed to claim some fame.
Advancing to junior college my life became better,
For my interests are pursued with purpose and vigour.
I began to appreciate everyone that matters,
And try to be their shelter when it pitter patters.
Army was the place that I felt truly at home,
Where my efforts are acknowledged and my talents honed.
I found more friends who think beyond the box,
And thus stretched my limits to levels I had never known.
Now in university I will do my best,
And do what I can to benefit the rest.
No man is an island and neither a woman too;
Gaining a meaningful experience will be my quest.
I thank everyone for their well-wishes and simple gifts,
As they have made me smile higher than the tallest cliff.
My wish for all of you will be just an inspiring quote –
You will when you believe.

Pre-Birthday Lunch...
At a Pizza Hut branch,
For a simple lunch,
I celebrated my birthday,
With a familiar bunch.
Their presence was suffice,
But they still sprung a surprise,
By presenting me a gift,
That was really very nice.
I know that it is hard to find,
A gift that suits my kind,
Because I don’t have much preference,
As simple is what comes to my mind.
Thanks again for spicing up my life,
To all my friends who fuel my drive.
The greatest gift to me,
Is that you’re all still alive.

Purchasing a Laptop...
Some people are friendly,
Some of them are nice,
But others are out to make you angry,
By giving useless advice.
“Cash & carry only”, the offer state,
To get a cheap Bluetooth and memory upgrade.
But without money I will have to wait;
I hope tomorrow will not be too late.
Early next day I made my way down,
Only to be stopped by a security clown.
She denied me entry with a stern frown,
Enforcing her authority which was the lowest around.
I requested then to speak to the in-charge,
To explain my predicament and hope for the best.
Locating him took some time as the hall is large,
And as I waited she had to make me distressed.
She reiterated that I cannot enter the area;
Not even a step even if it is just one corner.
What she added nearly caused me hysteria,
That is I can only pay by asking the cashier over.
The counter was like a good 20 metres away,
And why would they shift their equipment just for me to pay?
I just needed a while inside and would be on my way,
But maybe she found it exciting to keep me at bay.
Soon the in-charge arrived and ruled in my favour,
And I rushed in thanking everyone except her.
I could almost sense the bitter flavour,
But I chose to ignore it for enemies I do not prefer.

Divergence...
Each of our friends has their own life to lead and their own dream to live,
So moving forward together will no doubt be tough.
Thus there are days when we arrive at crossroads with grief,
And each of our friends decides to go on a separate path.
Everyone will be hesitant and reluctant to leave,
But the world keeps spinning and time will not freeze.
Time waits for no man so neither should we,
For procrastination is the chance killer to some degree.
We must gather our courage and do what we must,
To achieve our aims while our bodies still last.
With only a life and no reset button in sight,
Never regret your chosen paths and you will be alright.
True friends will render help no matter where you are,
So there is no need to worry about distance being far.
Wipe your tears away and stomach your emotions;
When the time is ripe we will meet at intersections.

Bird Bird...
A young girl ran to the market,
With five coins in her hand.
She wanted to free five birds,
To bless her brother who is leaving this land.
However five coins is only enough,
For one bird at the stall.
The girl bought a bird nonetheless,
Because she’s too afraid to brawl.
Along came a foreigner,
Who saw the look on her face.
It broke his heart somewhat,
So he took out his card with haste.
He bought ten thousand birds,
And watched the girl walk to the cliff.
He released them before the girl could,
And immediately she started to sniff.
She cried her lungs out,
That her brother is going to die.
Because the heaven won’t hear her now,
As other birds flooded the sky.
The foreigner was shocked,
By the damage he had done.
But before he could say anything,
The bombing run had begun.
Excretion spattered all around,
On every car, house, adult and child.
The unity of ten thousand birds combined,
Can indeed be foul and wild.
Sometimes what we do might be nice,
But the result could be a surprise.
So it’s best to review and research,
To prevent paying a hefty price.

Power Failure...
I never thought things would be like this,
That I have to use a pen to draft this piece.
The power is gone and who knows when,
Everything will be restored to before the power end.
My computer is off and so on paper I’m writing,
And the lights are out so it’s natural light I’m seeing.
My house phone is dead because it’s a mobile,
And so is my heart because it’s fragile.
How many times do I have to go through this trauma,
Of not treasuring the essentials until it’s gone forever?
How many times do I have to suffer,
Knowing that what I hold dear is held by someone sooner?
I detest this, but I’m still a failure,
So I will have to try harder,
But for now I’ll let my mind take over,
And let my heart take a breather.

Talent, Where Art Thou?
Some can paint a picture,
No matter how they write,
Some can close their eyes,
And win a boxing fight.
Everyone has some talent,
Be it known or unknown.
The opportunity has to arise,
Then talent can be honed.
The chance can come early,
Or it might come late.
Anything is better than never,
But to me it is up to fate.
To others it is up to God,
Or it is up to Karma.
I just hope it is not determined,
By your papa or mama.
We have to take charge of,
What we call our lives.
If we do not we will lose out,
And miss the chance when it arrives.
We cannot choose our parents,
Nor can we pick our birthplace.
Each of our unique experience,
Will never be erased.
That makes us so special,
As shown by the way we talk.
How we think is different too,
As well as the way we walk.
If all these are destined,
Then we only have a say,
On the course of our education,
And how we live our day.
If no chances come your way,
And your talent is unknown still,
Maybe yours is better hidden;
Who knows if it is to kill?

ORD...
It is time;
I shall go.
History;
Should stay so.
They need help,
So I give.
But time’s up;
Got to leave.
We take turns,
To help them.
In Army;
It’s condemned.
The next guy,
Ain’t good yet.
So I pray,
And I fret.
Not much use;
I still go.
He struggles,
But will grow.
He will see;
He will learn.
If not so,
He will burn.
Its okay,
It’s alright.
I went through,
The same plight.
I survived;
Here I am.
No more days,
In that camp.
Still serving?
All the best.
Do your max;
End with zest.

Money...
Education is all about the exchange of knowledge such that those who receive it will be able to comprehend more complex problems and derive solutions efficiently and effectively. This, translated into economic terms, means that education is a tool used to increase the worth of people. Our value is measured by how much we prove that we know and can handle through examinations, presentations and daily social interactions. In other words, the better we are at tackling problems, the more valued we are in this world.
Sometimes, I feel that we are so engrossed in educating ourselves that we forget why we have to in the first place. If you could clear your mind and think of why, you will find that all this education is simply for securing a well-paying job in the future. Of course, we hone our inter-personal skills and develop a logical mind to prevent ourselves from being gullible through education, and even be able to help other needy people with our skills and knowledge, but the main aim is still to earn money to sustain our lives.
Money makes the world go round, but to think of it, even without money the world is still round and spins around. Unfortunately, we have since long ago connected our lives with money like we did with technology, so we can never live without them. It is interesting to note that we can never earn enough money, just like we can never make enough friends, for time is something that we are always short of. Therefore, we are always on the quest to get things done quickly and get the most out of it, so finding ways and means to earn money efficiently is never foreign to most of us.
When we are still studying, earning money will mean looking for our parents and coaxing them into parting with their cash. Otherwise, it will be looking for part-time jobs at some fast food restaurant or being a sales assistant at a retail store. After we have completed our education, it is unlikely that we continue to leech off our parents. Our pay expectation will be much higher as we will be deemed to be of a greater worth once we have those certificates, so obviously the jobs that we seek have to pay better. Furthermore, as Singaporeans, we are pickier, so we require that the job location be accessible and near our homes, have plenty of incentives, have flexible working hours, etc. Normally, the best paying jobs are proportionate to the amount of effort and money spent during education, such as investors, lawyers and doctors. There are also jobs that yield money that is proportionate to the amount of effort spent after education, such as writers, designers and salesmen, just to name a few.
From here, I would like to draw the focus of this write-up to this particular group of salesmen, who call themselves multi-level marketers or network marketers. They operate on a business model which thrives on human greed, which is unethical to many but to those who have joined such companies, it is an opportunity to move from being poor to being rich. It is often said that those who are in such companies for a considerable length of time are reaping monetary rewards into the tens of thousands every month. Such companies usually do not pay their employees a salary, for the employees earn hefty commissions by selling the company’s products, recruiting more personnel and from other employees under them who are also doing the same. The products or services are often healthcare related because it is one of the easiest to sell and consumers will most likely have to follow-up for prolonged periods of time. Everyone wants to live a long healthy life, and so does the multi-level marketer.
I am not saying that multi-level marketing is evil or bad. It is a legitimate career that our government legalised to reduce unemployment rate. They offer the best personalised services that salesmen in retail stores can never provide, such as meeting you at a place convenient to you, delivering the products to your doorstep, explaining their products and services near your home etc. However, they are often not able to provide comparisons for products or services, and you are paying more than what you should. You can say that the cost of the personalised services is added into the product that you are purchasing, so it is an option whether you wish to buy the product off the shelf or through them. Just when you thought you have that option, they will let you know that the product or service they are offering is one-of-a-kind and cannot be found elsewhere. This eliminates the need for comparison and your option of buying it off the shelves. To complicate the situation, you usually know the multi-level marketers personally, which makes it harder for you reject their offers. When it comes to such a scenario, which happens most of the time, the marketer loses a friend and goes looking for another customer. The next time the marketer tries to call that friend out, the marketer will most surely be rejected due to the fears that he/she will try to sell products or services again. Business and friends do not mix well. That is the way things are.
Is money more important than friends? Will we ever be satisfied with the amount of money we earn? After earning so much and if one fine day we die of a freak accident, will we die happy? If it is not about money then why are we so stressed up about studies right now? Shouldn’t we be focusing on the more meaningful things in life like assisting people and helping to think of solutions to alleviate the problems our society is facing? And shouldn’t all of us males be giving all out when we serve NS? It’s still all about the money isn’t it? If nobody pays us well we don’t give as much? I have my reservations.

Our Minds...
Sometimes when you dream,
You dream of people you love.
But at times when you dream,
You dream of people not from this Earth.
Some of them resemble people you know,
And the rest are strangers whom oddly you know.
You interact with them as you would with friends,
But after you wake up you wonder how so?
You try to recall with a shiver down your spine,
And start to question the power of your mind.
Was the dream from another dimension?
Or was it generated when your neurons intertwined?
Your “friends” in your dream seemed so natural and real,
And whatever they do is what you know they will.
If your mind is so mighty to render such environments,
Then using it well is indeed the ultimate skill.
Stop watching those drama serials,
And stop dreaming about being with the singer.
If you use more of your head and interact with people,
You will soon be able to use the unknown factor.
It allows you to see into the past and future,
And aid you to sense all imminent danger.
From any distance using neither actions nor words,
You can also “talk” to one another.
It is a part of our mind that is left undiscovered;
Believe it or not it is there all along.
But is this just the power of my imagination?
Or is it a dormant talent given to us when we were born?
It is unexplainable by science,
For we have yet to tap into the brain.
So every time when I talk about this,
Most will think that I am insane.

What About...
We try to be friendly to nature,
And practice the 3-Rs.
But what about the constant litter,
That we’ve been throwing out the house?
We fall so deeply in love,
And plan carefully for the future.
But what about those lonely people,
Living without a spouse?
We complain that we are suffering,
And we have not enough money.
But what about the forests,
That became paper for our wages?
We say that our houses are small,
And there are not enough rooms.
But what about the homeless,
Who sleep beneath the bridges?
We are technologically savvy,
And our standard of living is good.
But what about other concerns,
That we ignored for progress?
We are well educated,
And have a high paying job.
But what about the skills we learned,
That cause others misery for our success?
We invest heavily in travel,
And spend on land properties.
But what about the outer space,
Where it’s greatly unexplored?
We tend to our every need,
And live a blissful life.
But what about the human race,
When our coffins are obscured?

Nature From Above...
With the sky so wide,
And the land so vast,
When something happens,
It happens very fast.
Like one drop of substance,
From a winged vertebrate,
Takes less than a while,
To reach my unsuspecting head.
I was expecting another drop,
But it never came,
And when I felt something sticky,
I knew it wasn’t rain.
Looking at my fingers,
I saw some creamy paste.
It doesn’t look like a cake,
And thank goodness I didn’t taste.
I was quite stunned at first,
But soon the reality sunk in.
I really don’t know whether to frown,
Or to cheekily grin.
Nonetheless I went to the toilet,
While avoiding the puzzled crowd.
I don’t want to attract attention,
Especially those who are curious and loud.
I washed my hair thoroughly,
And celebrated with a sumptuous meal.
For twenty years nothing like this happened,
So it’s a sign that something might yield.

Separation...
Marriage takes two hands to clap,
But only one hand to slap.
Once it becomes a sad story,
There’s no point in saying sorry.
The parents will carry the blame,
But their children will bear their shame.
It’s something that can be prevented,
If only their parents are united.
Sadly it’s easier said than done,
When differences are unknowingly shunned,
Causing bombs of displeasure to grow,
Until a stage when they will blow.
What was a family will be a mess,
With the remaining living in distress.
All will hate the heartless who left,
Leaving them a void no matter what they have.
It’s very unfair to those who suffered,
But what’s done cannot be reversed.
So after you get married and/or have kids,
Think about others before you do something stupid.

Appointments...
When a venue is agreed upon,
And the time is set,
Please keep to your promises,
Without any regret.
Unless you are sick,
Or something happened at home,
You shouldn’t change the plan,
Based on your interest alone.
It is never okay,
Even though we say so,
For the itinerary has been planned,
And is destroyed when you don’t go.
It disappoints those,
Who make the effort to be there,
And shows that your character,
Is one who doesn’t care.
Repeat this a few times,
And soon you shall find,
That no one wants to go out with you,
So don’t say we’re not kind.
We are also not replacements,
To keep you company,
But if you insist on having one,
Get an escort with your money.
We do not provide service,
But we can be your friend,
Provided you treat us as one too,
And use some common sense.

Endless Fighting...
The universe is filled,
With trillions of stars,
And each could contain life,
Like what we are.
There are endless mysteries,
To what is out there in space.
But instead of exploring together,
We condemn each other in the face.
More weapons are bought,
And deadlier attacks are made,
With the excuse of seeking peace,
Which is achieved when all are dead.
The people are starving,
But the government doesn’t care.
They give the citizens guns,
And let them fight for their welfare.
Many are killed,
Forcing shops to close.
Thus the economy plunges,
Leaving nothing but ghosts.
The people are angered,
But they don’t know what to do,
So the country pointed her finger,
And they strike without a clue.
Retaliation is expected,
And missiles start to fly.
The people continue fighting,
And they never stop after they die.
Their sons and grandsons carry on,
Struggling for their freedom,
Which they had given up themselves,
But they refuse to listen.
A chicken and a duck,
Cannot understand each other.
One quack and one cluck,
And they don’t like other feathers.

Bicycle Chronicle...
With 15 other colleagues,
And a new found friend,
We began our journey,
From the east of this land.
We rode along the coast,
Through the road that never ends.
Even when we were against traffic,
Danger missed us at every bend.
All this while there was music,
Blasted from speakers with no brand.
It was the same set of speakers,
From the cycling trip back then.
They were still head-turners,
But not many people looked,
Because the speakers were cranky,
And the ground never shook.
We were quite wary,
Of some heads that spook,
For some might turn a circle,
Or disgusting enough to puke.
We were at
Where ladies were men.
We ate up all the Nasi Lemak,
Then off to Tampines we went.
Our minds were half asleep,
But our legs kept pedaling.
Along the path to Bedok Reservoir,
We forgot the word tiring.
However we could feel pain,
When we shift our butts.
The seats felt like durians,
And it hurts more with nuts.
We made our way back,
Once we had enjoyed the stars.
We travelled slightly faster,
As there were fewer cars.
Once we reached our starting point,
We collapsed onto the tables.
But the air-condition was cold,
So most started to tremble.
One by one they disappeared,
Leaving a few of us sleeping.
When we finally awakened,
We were so close to freezing.
The missing were having breakfast,
Out in the open air.
Once we were done thawing,
We joined them there.
Sadly the manager chased us,
When we slept after dawn.
But soon we returned our bicycles,
And in taxis we were gone.

Just Some of My Reasons for Some Things We Do...
We play so hard,
To satisfy our needs,
Such that we will feel more confident,
And ready to compete.
We study so much,
To keep ourselves informed,
Such that we can earn our worth,
And not easily be conned.
We sleep so frequently,
To replenish our energy,
Such that we can give our best,
And complete tasks efficiently.
We pray so often,
To ease our conscience,
Such that we will not feel singled out,
When others doubt our presence.
We care so incessantly,
To aid the human kind,
Such that we can contribute to society,
And leave a legacy behind.
We think so deep,
To anticipate the future,
Such that we can be prepared,
For the challenges we encounter.

Messaging People...
When I messaged people,
And they never reply,
I’ll always ponder,
The reasons why.
Could it be the network,
Which is congested at times?
Or could it be myself,
Who write nonsense sometimes?
Was it my phone or computer,
That reads sent but didn’t send?
Or was it what I had said,
That hurts but wasn’t what I meant?
Maybe they were too engrossed,
With the things they were doing?
Or maybe I am not a close friend,
So they don’t bother communicating?
In any case I’ll let things be,
And keep my hopes high for humanity.
I know messaging is not talking,
But I really hope that they reply me.

Going Home...
Alighting a train,
When passengers are boarding,
Is as easy as driving against traffic,
On a busy evening.
It just takes a while,
And a bit of skill,
To avoid the elbows,
Of those aggressive few.
Once you are out,
And gasping for air,
You meet another crowd,
Assembling at the stairs.
The lift is also not spared,
From the chaotic mob;
The overload buzzer explodes,
While the handicapped sob.
The escalator seems fast,
To a turtle or a snail,
For everyone thinks they’ll be killed,
If they don’t stand very still.
Those who are slaughtered,
Are those who try,
To do long jumps,
Without using their minds.
They try to jump to the concourse,
But landed on the tracks.
Obviously the train will come,
And they’ll be gone in a smack.
Anyway if you get downstairs,
Don’t be too happy,
For there is still the gantry,
That closes on you if unlucky.
Even if you got through,
Without getting bitten,
Make sure you check your fare;
Your money could be eaten.
Finally you exit the station,
And rewarded with some space,
Which will soon be invaded,
By insurance agents who give chase.
You can raise your palm and look away,
But nevertheless they stick all ways.
Sooner or later they’ll walk away,
With them cursed to be set ablaze.
We are all tired people,
Just eager to get home.
Why can’t everyone enforce courtesy,
And the agents leave us alone?

Sink Praying or Swim Living...
There is this guy whose town is being flooded, so he climbs out onto his roof and someone comes by in a canoe.
"Hop in! I'll save you!" he says.
"No, no, no. I have faith in God. He will save me."
The water rises, and he has no choice but to climb higher on the roof. Shortly after, a raft comes by.
"Come on in!" they say, "We’ll save you!"
"No, no, no. God will save me."
The water rises even higher. Out of desperation, he climbs up onto his chimney. Soon enough, a helicopter comes by.
"Let us help you!" they say.
"No, no, no. The good lord will make sure that I'm safe."
The water rises and the man drowns. He goes up to heaven and meets God.
The guy says, "What's the matter? Why didn't you save me?"
And God says, "What are you talking about? I sent two boats and a helicopter!"
New moral of the story: Prayers are not enough to save you.

Why the Heavy Rain...
The fields are dry;
The cattle are weak.
There is not enough water,
Even to fill a chicken’s beak.
The villagers feel helpless,
And thus they pray to the sky,
Hoping for some rain to come,
So that they could live by.
The sky felt their misery,
And granted heavy rain.
Over the fields it splattered,
And filled were the drains.
The sky gave the order,
To rain heavily every year.
So the assistants took note,
Such that it rains for sure.
A few centuries later,
The land was cleared.
Buildings were built,
And the cattle disappeared.
The assistants were like the people –
They always followed orders.
Most of them just work enough,
And would never go further.
So as planned the rain arrived,
With multiple lightning and thunder.
The people just stared in awe,
And why the pouring rain they wonder.
Soccer had to be cancelled,
Together with kite flying.
The streets has never been so empty,
Since the curfew for rioting.
The assistants just need to suggest,
That the rain falls sparingly.
Maybe because there was no reward,
Or maybe their bosses are unfriendly.
In any case I will be home for the week,
Easing the wounds of my lost wisdom teeth.
Our world will be a more comfortable place,
If only the assistants cared about the truth.

My Perspective of Life...
We try so hard,
To follow our dreams.
But many are oblivious,
To what is never seen.
We only have a life,
To live as we like.
The older our age,
The brighter the light.
The light at the end,
Like a tunnel at a bend.
We know we will see it,
But we just don’t know when.
Everyone is moving,
It’s just how fast or slow.
For some could be weak,
And some could be bold.
It doesn’t really matter,
How fast we take that path.
If we accept that we’re on it,
Nothing will be too tough.
Life will be a breeze,
With few worries in sight.
We will not be afraid,
To do whatever is our delight.
We can help other people,
Or screw up their lives.
Ultimately we’ll be dead,
So be ready when it arrives.
Whatever that was done,
Whatever that was said,
Will forever just be memories,
When we lie on our death beds.
Some people will cry,
Others will just sigh.
Whether we had done good or bad,
It’s simply bye.
But the crucial point is,
Whether we are pleased.
Pleased of what we have done,
Before we rest in peace.
